As aluminum is set for the largest annual demand increase among industrial metals with copper replacement in wire and cables as one of the key drivers, the low-cost metal is expected to replace at least 20 percent of copper usage in the near-term. While the copper-aluminum price ratio remains at record levels, producers are testing new aluminum alloys for use in electrical applications.


In Automotives, one of the key benefits of using aluminum over copper cables is that it offers a lower weight advantage and better longevity. This has become an important consideration for wiring harness applications for hybrid vehicles. Excess weight must be eliminated to bring hybrid and electric vehicles into compliance with new industry standards and government regulations. For every ounce of additional weight on a hybrid vehicle is an effect on its fuel consumption and battery life, lighter metals are optimum. The lighter the metal, the lighter the wiring harness and the other automotive cables will be. This translates to a better fuel economy and better battery life.


For 2017, analysts are expecting a substantial growth in lower cost aluminum use for new electrical applications, in particular, where aluminum alloys offer a direct replacement of traditional copper in wire and cable products. With a high price differential to remain, it is now cost effective for manufacturers to redesign and modify equipment and processes for a transition in a multitude of electrical applications.
